ENACTING THE DOCTRINE

According to Paul, the proper response to divine election is to be “holy and blameless before him” (Eph. 1:4) and to live “to the praise of his glorious grace / glory” (1:6, 12, 14). There is not one element in us that distinguished us from everyone else and prompted God in eternity past to choose us. We are all equal with respect to being image bearers of God. We are all equal with respect to our fallenness into sin. We are all equal with respect to our inability to rescue ourselves or merit salvation.

From an Arminian viewpoint, people are saved and continue in that salvation as they cooperate with prevenient grace. Their election is conditioned on this cooperation, which God perfectly foreknows. They rejoice in God’s provision. From a Reformed position, the elect receive divine grace that enables them to embrace salvation and continue in that salvation. Their election is unconditional, based on God’s good pleasure and sovereign will to grant them his grace. They rejoice in God’s provision.

From both perspectives, a sense of arrogance, favoritism, and entitlement is banished. How unthinkable it would be for humans to boast in themselves! Election levels everyone, putting all who are saved in debt to their Savior and his work on their behalf.

Perennial Questions and Problematic Issues

Why did God choose me for salvation?

Election seems so unfair.

Why didn’t God choose everyone to be saved?

If the elect are going to be saved, why should we engage in evangelism?

Is there a conflict in God between his wish for everyone to be saved and his choice of only some to be saved?

I believe in election, but I just can’t believe in reprobation.
